As acceleration goes, the shift from planning to real construction outdoes most experiences. A few weeks ago, we were simply collecting quotes and working out roughly when we would be attempting each task, along with updating quotes and finishing plans and models. So when we received a phone call on the Monday from the builder who wanted to double-check a couple of the dimensions on his plans, we asked if this meant he was about to start. “We’ve already cut back the banks and we’re about to layout the position of the house” he replied.
That afternoon we rushed off to the plot to double-check that the house was going to end up in the right place… and thank god we did, it needed pushing 1.5m further north so that it would catch the maximum possible sun. The following morning, the main hole for the crawlspace was dug. That afternoon the positions were marked out for the footings and about 2 days later, they too had been dug. The following monday, the concrete was poured for the footings.
In the meantime we’ve been running around trying to source the various conduits needed to get services into the house before the walls go up, and getting the wood, tools and slates needed to slate the roof of the shed (a condition of our planning permission).
In no particular order then, the photos of these various events…
