Little baby tombstones

The plan was fairly simple. Spend one weekend putting the shed foundations in place, then take delivery of the wood for the floor and stud frame and build the shed the following weekend. And it started well…

Weekend one – Foundations

Foundations for the shedThe foundations are based on the principle of the rubble trench foundation. A hole is dug down to the frost line, lined with geotextile and filled with gravel. A concrete block is positioned on top to act as a padstone. The geotextile is folded over the concrete and the block is surrounded with more gravel to help lock it in place and also make it more attractive. It sounds simple, but digging holes in marl involves a pickaxe and a lot of scraping. It took two of us 2 days (well, a little less as there was a lot of to-and-froing to collect the gravel) to dig and fill the holes, then level the padstones. We were somewhat sore the following day.
